West Ham, in the end, could not quite withstand the barrage. Bayer Leverkusen’s first goal — a Jonas Hofmann shot that picked its way through a thronged penalty area — broke its resistance. The club’s Europa League adventure will likely extend no further than the quarterfinals. Xabi Alonso, its estimable young coach, remains on course to claim a treble — league, cup, Europa League — in his first full season. West Ham is starting to feel at home on the continent: It reached the Europa League semifinals in 2022, losing out to Eintracht Frankfurt, and then beat Fiorentina to claim the Europa Conference League trophy in 2023.

Leverkusen snatch 2-2 draw at Bayern with stoppage-time penalty

MUNICH, Germany, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Bayer Leverkusen scored a stoppage time penalty through Exequiel Palacios to rescue a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich on Friday and snap their winning start. The match lived up to its billing and the result left Bayern and Leverkusen level on 10 points at the top of the standings. Palacios thundered in his spot kick after Alphonso Davies had brought down Jonas Hofmann. But it was Bayern who scored with Tel weaving past the Leverkusen defence to set up Goretzka. Leverkusen, however, had the final say with Davies' sloppy defending earning them a last-gasp spot kick after a VAR review.

BERLIN, Sept 2 (Reuters) - New signing Victor Boniface scored twice for the second consecutive week as Bayer Leverkusen blew Darmstadt 98 away 5-1 on Saturday to make it three wins out of three league games for a perfect Bundesliga start. The 22-year-old Nigerian, who struck twice in last week's win over Borussia Moenchengladbach while also netting in the German Cup once, joined a month ago from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium but has hit the ground running. Boniface opened his account with a superb solo run and chipped in his finish in the 21st minute after driving past three defenders. Darmstadt levelled through Oscar Vilhelmsson's close range header but Xabi Alonso's team went back in front four minutes after the restart through Exequiel Palacios. Boniface then bagged his second goal of the afternoon, slipping into the box and flicking the ball past the keeper from a tight angle after a quick passing move.

The Bavarians have won the last 11 consecutive league crowns but they needed a Borussia Dortmund slip-up on the final matchday last season to retain it. A 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup at home on Saturday left Tuchel, who took over from Julian Nagelsmann late last season, fuming. Kane's German debut, with a low-key substitute appearance in the second half of their Super Cup loss, did little to dampen Bayern fans' enthusiasm and expectations. Their Super Cup win over Bayern gave them an early shot of confidence but they will have to repeat it again on Saturday when they face ambitious Leverkusen in their season opener. "We can improve many things but this obviously did give us a push," said Leipzig coach Marco Rose of the win against Bayern.
